Relieve Dental Abscess Pain With One Of These Three Homemade Remedies

by Vincent Jennings

Dental abscesses can be extremely painful. After all, they are infected masses full of debris and pus. The infection typically starts out as a tooth infection, but it can easily spread to other areas of your mouth, especially your gums. Most abscesses need to be drained in order for them to heal properly, but these home remedies will give you some pain relief until it's time for your dentist appointment.

Gargling Salt Water

Gargling salt water will relieve your pain fairly quickly. Salt is a natural pain reliever, however, it also helps the swelling in the infected area go down.

  1. In a glass, mix together 8 ounces of lukewarm water and one teaspoon of table salt.
  2. Take a big drink and swish the salt water around in your mouth for as long as you can stand it.
  3. Spit the salt water into the sink.
  4. Repeat the process as needed.

Use Essential Oils

Did you know that there are numerous essential oils that can relieve tooth pain? In fact, some essential oils even work as anti-bacterial agents, so they will help your body fight the infection that's causing your abscess. You don't want to drink the essential oils. Instead, put a small amount of the essential oil on your finger. Then, massage the oil into the area surrounding the abscess. Each of these essential oils treat your abscess in different ways:

  • Peppermint oil relieves pain instantly
  • Oregano oil helps you fight the infection causing your abscess because it's a natural anti-bacteria, immune booster, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, and anti-viral.
  • Clove oil helps you fight the infection causing the abscess and relieves pain. However, clove oil isn't as strong as oregano oil. You can use clove oil in one of two ways: massage it into the area surrounding the abscess or use it to brush your teeth.

While essential oils work wonders, you need to check with your dentist before you use them to ensure the oils you use won't affect his treatment in any way. Simply, call your dentist's office to ask whether or not the use of essential oils is okay before your dentist appointment. Also, remember, you don't want to ingest essential oils. The oils are highly concentrated compounds, which can make you sick if you ingest them.

Raw Garlic Juice

Raw garlic kills bacteria naturally, boosts your immune system, and relieves pain, making it a great option to use when you're treating a dental abscess at home. Simply, crush a raw garlic clove to release the juice. Then, use your finger to massage the garlic juice into the area surrounding the abscess. Alternatively, you mash a small piece of a garlic clove so that it begins releasing juice. Then, place it between your cheek and gums.

Dental abscesses aren't fun to deal with, but they are easily treated. While you need to see a  dentist (such as one from Dental Services by Bloor Smile Dental), you shouldn't simply live with the pain until it's time for your appointment. Instead, use a home remedy to give yourself some relief.
